- The Mountain Men went west seeking adventure and profit from trapping furs. Joe Meek was a well known Mountain Man.
- The Mormons went west because they were seeking religious freedom and felt that they were in danger elsewhere. Brigham Young and Joseph Smith were well known Mormons.
- Many Missionaries went west hoping to convert Native Americans to Christianity. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman were Missionaries in Oregon Territory.
- Pioneers went west hoping to find a better life through the opportunity for free land and natural resources. The Sagers were Pioneers.
- Native American groups went west for a variety of reasons. The Sioux/Lakota went west because other peoples came onto their land and they refused to yield. They also took land from some neighboring groups to build their territory up. Many Cherokee went west for a very different reason. They were forced off of their land by the US government.
- Different people who came to be known collectively as Tejanos went west for various reasons. Sam Houston went to escape trouble in his own life, while Stephen F. Austin was hoping to make a better life out of the opportunity for free land for his people. Santa Anna came north to try to keep order among rebelling colonists of all types .
